Every June and July, thousands of students leave shared houses across Bristol — in Redland, Cotham, Stokes Croft, Fishponds, Horfield and Filton. What gets left behind is staggering: sofas, mattresses, desks, kitchen equipment, bags of clothes and mountains of general rubbish. Much of it ends up fly-tipped on pavements, costing the council (and ultimately Bristol taxpayers) thousands to clean up. Here's how to handle your end-of-year clearance properly.
The Problem
Student house clearance is a known issue in Bristol. At the end of each academic year, furniture and household items pile up on streets in popular student areas near the University of Bristol and UWE campuses. Fly-tipping is illegal and carries fines of up to £50,000. More importantly, it's antisocial and unnecessary — Bristol has plenty of options for responsible disposal.
Protect Your Deposit
Your landlord or letting agent will inspect the property after you leave. Anything left behind — furniture, food, cleaning supplies, rubbish — will be cleared at your expense, deducted from your deposit. A typical landlord-arranged clearance costs £200-£500, and you'll have no say in the price. It's always cheaper to handle it yourself or book a clearance directly.
What to Do with Your Stuff
Donate It
Many student items are still perfectly usable. Bristol charities like the SOFA Project, Emmaus and British Heart Foundation accept furniture, kitchenware, books and electrical items in working condition. Some universities also run end-of-year donation drives — check your student union for details. The University of Bristol's "Big Give" scheme collects reusable items from halls and student houses.
Sell It
Facebook Marketplace and the Bristol student selling groups are very active in May and June. Incoming students are looking for exactly what you're getting rid of — desks, shelving, kitchen supplies, lamps. Price items to sell quickly and arrange collection before you leave.
Recycle It
Bristol's recycling centres accept most household items for free. If you have access to a car, a couple of trips to St Philips or Hartcliffe Way can deal with the bulk of it. Sort items before you go — wood, metal, electrical and general waste each go in different bays.
Book a Clearance
If you're short on time, don't have a car, or the volume is too much to handle between housemates, a professional end-of-tenancy clearance is the simplest option. We clear everything from every room, recycle and donate what we can, and leave the property ready for inspection. Student house clearances typically cost £150-£350.
Plan Ahead
Don't leave everything to the last day of your tenancy. Start sorting through belongings 2-3 weeks before you move out. Agree with your housemates who's responsible for shared items. Book a clearance or donation collection in advance — June is our busiest month for student clearances and availability fills up quickly.
